OAU STUDENTS PROTEST POOR WELFARE, STRIKE LOOMS.

The students of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, on Monday, demanded an improvement upon their welfare.

The protesting students chorused “WAR”, with an inscription on their placards that the administration of Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Bamitale Omole, should be probed by anti-corruption agencies.

The students alleged that ‎epileptic power and poor water supply, was making the OAU campus less conducive for learning.
The students also blamed the termination of the admission of an in-coming part-one student of the History Department, Olawale Owolabi, for their action.

It was learnt that Owolabi, popularly referred to as Ogunruku, had joined the protest against increment of acceptance fee from N2,000 to N20,000 in 2011, when his admission was terminated.

Some of the students also said the protest was a warning to the school management not to increase accommodation (hostel) fee.

In the past, similar protests of this nature had led to the closure of the school. Few months ago, the management of the institution declared a mid-semester break.

The President of the OAU Students’ Union, Mr. Omotayo Akande, said, “The union has exhausted the tool of diplomacy without getting reasonable concession on how our welfare would be improved upon. Our demands are more than just light and water, as the horrendous living condition of our hostels require immediate attention.

“A room in Moremi Hall was on fire recently and the ladies couldn’t get a fire extinguisher in the block to put out the fire. This, among other things, inform our demand for safe and decent hostel facilities.”

The Chairman, Awolowo Hall, Opeyemi Aina, described the condition under which the student were living in the hostels as pitiable.

“Our welfare is more important to us than anything; it’s a foundation for us to have sound understanding of what we are being taught. The toilets are bad. We are not happy with the inadequate funding of education,” he added.

Akintola Hall Chairperson, Sade Adeyeni, lamented that the roofs of some rooms in the hostel were leaking.
