UNILAG Don recounts ordeal in kidnappers den

Professor and Head of English Department of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Prof. Hope Eghagha, today recounted a bizarre ordeal he suffered in the hands of kidnappers some five years ago.

He also stressed on the need for parents to make frantic efforts to see that they raise kids that will make society proud.

TheNewsGuru recalls Prof. Eghagha, who celebrated his birthday yesterday in Lagos, was kidnapped by unknown gunmen September 30 2012 as Delta State Commissioner for Higher Education, and was released by his abductors after 16 days in captivity.

He was kidnapped while he was driving from Warri to Asaba, the Delta State capital. The kidnappers reportedly shot and killed his police orderly before taking the commissioner away to an unknown destination.

Eghagha, as the Chief Examiner of the Mike Okonkwo National Essay Competition for Secondary School pupils, speaking today at the 18th Mike Okonkwo Annual Lecture and the presentation of awards to winners of the essay competition held at the Muson Centre Lagos, said parents and teachers assist their children and students, respectively, in committing examination malpractices.
This, he said, is a bane to the development of the child.
The English HOD at the UNILAG rebuked students who plagiarize materials online in participating in the essay competition.

“After applying standard criteria in the assessment, we concluded that 27 entries were not original; in other words, they were plagiarized.
“This was after cross-checking each entry carefully with internet sources to determine their originality.

“This is one of the problems confronting us in the education sector currently. Some students simply download material from the internet and submit same as their original work,” the UNILAG Don lamented.

Prof. Eghagha stressed if children must grow up to make the society proud, parents and teachers must desist from aiding their kids/wards in passing examinations, and that students must strive to produce original contents for their academic submissions.
