Tragedy struck in Ede, Osun State at the weekend when an exstudent of Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, Ile-Ife simply identified as Christian, hacked his mother to death with a cutlass and sat with the corpse for several hours.
The incident, which has been confirmed by the acting Public Relations Officer, PPRO, of Osun Command of Nigerian Police Force, Ajibade Egbedele, occurred around Oba Laoye Area of Ede town.
He explained that police got a distress call and men of Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, quickly mobilised to the scene and arrested the suspect. According to him, the suspect is being kept at the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, where investigation is ongoing. Sources in the neighbourhood of the incident told National Mirror that the suspect requested N20,000 from the mother, who refused, saying she lacked such amount at the time.
Apparently miffed by her failure to meet his demand, Christian was said to have sent his younger sister, Folake, on an errand, and forced his mother into a room in the house and killed her with a cutlass.
A resident of Oba Laoye Area, who pled anonymity, said: “Christian after killing the poor woman sat with her corpse in the room. His sister became suspicious when she returned home and met no one. “She was the one that alerted us when she saw blood coming out of the room from under the door. She tried opening the door, but it was locked. Police were later informed and when the door was forced open, Christian was found sitting next to the deceased in a pool of blood.” The source added that the deceased lost her husband 14 years ago and single-handedly raised Christian and his other two siblings. The suspect was said to have recently completed his project and graduated from OAU.
