Enugu Assembly disagrees with ESUT students over demolished fence

The Enugu State House of Assembly has disagreed with the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) over a demolished fence at Mkpokiti Pocket Layout, Enugu.

The House Committee on Education on Tuesday in Enugu, directed the university management, to compel its students to rebuild within one month, the fence which it claimed was demolished by them.

The Chairman of the committee, Mr Mathew Ugwueze, gave the directive while announcing its resolution on the matter at a meeting with the MSP Director, Prof. Jude Udenta and the representatives of the students.

But the Students Union Government (SUG) has denied their involvement in the demolition of the fence.

Newsmen report that Mkpokiti Pocket Layout which is close to the Matured Student Programme (MSP) building of the university was part of the university premises.

Ugwueze reminded the management of the university that the State Government in 2012 allocated the layout to the legislators and some other residents.

He alleged that while the residents of the layout were erecting the fence some students conspired among themselves and demolished it.

The chairman who said the fence was contained in Enugu master plan added that the residents merely assisted the state government in erecting the fence.

He said that he intimated the MSP director before the residents embarked on the fence construction.

“I also asked Prof. Udenta to relate it to the students so that they would not react ignorantly,” he added.

A member of the committee, Dr Emeka Ogbuobor, also noted that an act signed by a sitting governor of a state superseded one signed by a former governor of same state.

Responding, Prof. Udenta, however, said that in 1997, the then military administrator in the state, Sule Ahmed, allocated the land to the MSP to build its staff quarters.

Also, the Students’ Union President (regular), Mr Uchenna Eze and his MSP counterpart, Mr Azeez Olarewaju, denied the students’ involvement in the demolition of the fence.
