As part of events marking its 57th Founder’s Day ceremony, the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, UNN, has established a laptop assembly plant at its Nsukka campus.

Addressing journalists shortly after the commissioning, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Benjamin Ozumba, said the goal of the project, which is known as Lion Laptops, was to make laptop affordable for students to carry on with research and other trainings.

He further stated that apart from making the systems available for the students and the university community, students of engineering will, through the plant, develop and acquire further skills in laptop assembly.

In his speech during the commissioning ceremony, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, who was also the Founder’s Day lecturer, said the idea of the university to establish a laptop assembly plant was not only innovative, but also in line with the dreams of the founding fathers of the university.

He praised the efforts of the Ozumba-led leadership and called on other tertiary institutions in the country to take a cue from UNN. He expressed hope that the idea will revolutionise the technology sector to depend less on imported goods.

Also speaking, Head of the Assembly Plant, Engineer Charles Emembolu, stressed that with the establishment of the Lion Laptop Assembly plant in UNN, the institution will continue to occupy the number one position in Nigeria.

The high point of the event was the presentation of the Lion Laptops to the Sultan of Sokoto, Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuani of Enugu State and his Delta State Counterpart, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa.
