The Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities has warned the authorities of the Obafemi Awolowo Universities to stop maltreating its members in its staff school.
The National Vice President of the association in the Western Zone, Alfred Jimoh, gave the warning in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Friday in Lagos.
Jimoh said the alleged maltreatment of the staff school teachers should stop in the interest of peace.
The NAN reports that parents, teachers and pupils of the institution’s staff school had on May 3 staged a protest over the non-payment of the staff salaries.
The staff are said to be owed four month salaries, while parents complained of an arbitrary increase in school fees charged by the school’s management.
Some of the aggrieved parents complained that tuition fees has gradually risen from N1,600 to N4,000 and from N20,000 and N25,000 respectively.
Speaking on the increasing school fees, Jimoh said the action of the university management translated to taking laws into their hands.
He said the university authorities had no right to stop the salaries of its members because the lingering dispute between the association and the Federal Government was still pending before the National Industrial Court.
He said: “I think the authorities of OAU are merely trying to jump the gun here and use the back door to maltreat our people and send them out of job, but we will resist it.
“The 2009 agreement between this association and the Federal Government states that the recurrent and capital expenditure of staff schools should be the responsibility of the government.
“But suddenly last year, government tried to renege on the agreement.
“This led to disagreement between the association, the Federal Ministries of Labour and Education.
“Right now the issue is pending before the National Industrial Court.
“It will only be fair for the Federal Government to continue paying members their salaries pending when judgment over the matter is passed.”
