    3D PRINTER PRINTS A CAR

"If I had a big enough 3D printer, I would print a car... " is something people say when fantasizing about interesting ways to make both new and old things and that is exactly what Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) did.

The result of a project that took only six weeks from conception to finished product, the vintage 1965 Shelby Cobra sportscar not only celebrates the Shelby Cobra’s 50th anniversary, but also acts as a demonstration of modern additive manufacturing and rapid prototyping technology. The 3D parts are made from 20% carbon fiber. Even the headrest brackets are 3D-printed. The car was built at the US Department of Energy’s Manufacturing Demonstration Facility at ORNL using the Big Area Additive Manufacturing (BAAM) machine developed by ORNL and Cincinnati Incorporated.

The lab added an electric powertrain to complement today’s technologies. Check out 3D printing in action and dream about what  you could make if you had your 3D printer.
