That there was an accident at 9th Mile on Tuesday, June 2nd, 2015 at about 5:45 pm which involved a tanker and about two buses is no longer a breaking news. What is news is, however, that the figures being projected and tossed about by certain persons are baseless.
Representatives of the Student Union Government investigated the situation and found out that as at this afternoon (Wednesday, 3rd June, 2015), only three deaths have been recorded from the accident, as against the news by some blogs that 24 or more students died in the accident. Also, the representatives confirmed that only ONE of the deceased is a student of UNN (a female student whose full identity is yet to be ascertained).
The Information Officer, SUG, UNN also confirmed the casualties from the protest on Monday, June 1st, 2015. According to him, 5 students were injured by the driver who overran the protesters, and while some of them are being treated at the University's Medical Center, others have been transferred. He further enjoined all students, friends and well-wishers of the university to remain law abiding even as academic activities remain suspended for the next two weeks.
While we mourn the dead and grieve with the friends and families of the deceased, it is important we plead with fellow Lions and Lionesses, and bloggers to be careful enough to verify things for themselves before either believing or spreading any news, especially when it concerns human lives or has the tendency to incite people. A news as critical as the loss of life should be spread with caution. It is of no use unsettling people with some outrageous figures which will ultimately prove to be false.
