Ayomide Ariyibi, a 100-level student of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), has killed herself, the school’s management has confirmed.
The deceased was a student of business administration.
Toyin Adebula, the deputy registrar, UNILAG, stated that Ariyibi killed herself at home.
According to an information shared on Facebook by Ajani Damilola, the student was accused of stealing clothes and make-up kits by her roommates in Amina Hall.
On Thursday, some of her roommates belongings were found in Ariyibi's bags (3 different bags - makeup in the first bag, clothes in the second bag and more clothes in the third bag)
Ariyibi was said to have called her mother who came to the school to settle the issue. The makeup was valued at #2000 which her mother paid after which her mother told her to pack her things and follow her home
As she was being led home, her hostel mates reportedly booed and called her names.
Her mom went back to work that afternoon and on returning in the evening, she saw Ariyibi in a critical condition. When she asked Ariyibi what had happened, Ariyibi just pointed to the bottle of sniper she had taken. Her mother gave her palm oil to drink but when that didn't improve her condition she was rushed to a medical centre at ebute metta. Her condition wasn't getting any better so she was taken to LUTH from there. She reportedly died at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital.
The deputy registrar noted that the school was yet to confirm what made her commit suicide.
“There is a rumour that she was accused of stealing some things in the hostel. When we meet the family, we will know what exactly happened. But definitely, she is dead. Definitely, she committed suicide,” he said.
“I have gone to her hall and I have confirmed the incident. Our thoughts are with the family.”
