UNIBEN VC URGES FG TO SAVE UNIBEN FROM EROSION MENACE.

Vice Chancellor of University of Benin, Prof. Faraday Orumwense, has appealed to the Federal Government and other relevant agencies to save the institution from erosion menace, lamenting that over six houses have been destroyed on the Ugbowo campus of the university.
The VC, in a chat with newsmen in Benin City, also raised alarm over the activities of land speculators, saying that some of the university’s lands have been encroached on by persons from the neighbouring communities, adding that the university will contact security agents to help it recover the lands.
He said: “About six blocks have caved in due to erosion and those buildings were occupied by our staff. The problem is that if nothing urgent is done, the gully erosion will expand to other areas in the university. So, we are appealing to the Federal Government and the NDDC to come to our aid because this is a very serious problem.”
Prof. Orumnwense explained that the university was partnering foreign universities to strengthen “joint research and exchange programmes for staff and students,” while “a number of foreign agencies have shown interest in supporting the research efforts of the university.”
